A continuing project to explore the idea: is what we do more important than what we gain from it?
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson

Rob’s Top Track
A space to share my current favourite song. Whether it’s a new jam or a classic tune, it will always be close to my heart. I hope you find something you like and check back regularly. All previous songs listed here can be found on their own page above.
This week I listened to the album ‘In the Aeroplane Over the Sea’ by Neutral Milk Hotel, after a long while meaning to. The chaotic, often distorted and twisted, folk sound took me aback, but what surprised me most was the band’s penchant and skill in crafting melody.
For me, this was no more obvious anywhere than on the track ‘Holland, 1945’. The song explodes into life with powerful, distorted guitar chords and does not slow down throughout. The melancholy tone of singer Jeff Mangum’s voice provides the moreish melody, which moves up and down like a roller coaster, and an emotional one at that.
Given the somber subject of the song and the lyrical references throughout, the track is chillingly beautiful.
